Recall that it is not intended for use in automobiles. Its interior contains a precisely designed Hall circuit and a copper channel that converts current to voltage close to the surface. Because of the proximity of the Hall sensor to the magnetic field in this arrangement, it is accurate.

When current flows through the main copper line (from pins 1 and 2 to pins 3 and 4), used for sampling, the output voltage goes up (>VOUT(Q)). This path has low resistance (about 1.2 mΩ), so there's little power loss. Also, the device can handle up to five times the normal current because of the thick copper conductor. Importantly, for applications needing electrical isolation, there's no need for expensive methods like opto-isolators because the terminals of the copper channel are separate from the signal leads (pins 5 through 8).
