The LM3886TF is an advanced audio power amplifier known for its impressive performance. It can deliver 68W of continuous power into a 4-ohm load and 38W into an 8-ohm load with only 0.1% THD+N across frequencies from 20Hz to 20kHz, ensuring excellent sound quality. With a signal-to-noise ratio greater than 92dB and a low noise floor of just 2.0uV, it provides clear audio output. This amplifier also boasts extremely low distortion levels, measuring only 0.03% at the rated output, and exceptional linearity with an IMD (SMPTE) rating of 0.004%. Comprehensive Protection
Under-Voltage Protection: Ensures power supplies and capacitors reach full values before activating LM3886TF to prevent DC output spikes during system power-up. Similarly, during turn-off, the output is grounded before power supplies to prevent transients.
Over-Voltage Protection: Limits output current to approximately 11Apeak and provides voltage clamping without internal diodes, managing large current spikes efficiently.
SPiKe Protection: Guards against instantaneous peak-temperature stressing using a power transistor array, with possible waveform distortion when activated.
Thermal Protection: Shuts down at 165°C and restarts at 155°C, cycling between these temperatures to reduce thermal stress and enhance reliability under sustained fault conditions.
Supply Bypassing Simplified
The LM3886 has great power supply rejection and doesn't need a regulated supply. But to avoid oscillations, it's important to bypass all op amps and power op amps with low-inductance capacitors placed close to the package terminals. If bypassing isn't enough, it can lead to "motorboating" or high-frequency issues. Using a big capacitor (10 μF or more) and a small ceramic one (0.1 μF) helps absorb low-frequency changes and prevents high-frequency feedback. If bypassing isn't done well, the load current's rectified part might feed back into internal circuitry, causing distortion at high frequencies. So, using a big electrolytic capacitor (470 μF or more) at the package terminals is crucial.
